Art of Empty Space

Exhibition and Book Releases | New Orleans, USA

Akihiko Sugiura will present his new conceptual artwork, Art of Empty Space, at Ferrara Showman Gallery in New Orleans, Louisiana, from November 4 to December 2, 2026.

Art of Empty Space is both a theoretical text and a conceptual artwork that takes its own theoretical system as material.

It constructs a model of cognition and the world that brings together the space of cognitive possibilities, the articulated and unarticulated, communication and misdelivery, artistic experience, and the value of art. Through this model, the work shifts the question from what can qualify as art to what can become cognizable through art.

The exhibition presents the text-based work alongside related conceptual installations. These installations are independent works that resonate with the theoretical text rather than simply illustrating it.

Book Releases

Two editions will be released in conjunction with the exhibition:

• Art of Empty Space — English translated edition

• 空白の芸術 — Japanese compiled edition

The two editions have been prepared through different processes of translation and compilation and form part of the larger art project.
